Rollover Accidents
One of the deadliest types of car accidents a driver can be involved in is a rollover crash. During these incidents, the vehicle actually flips over onto its topside, and may even continue to flip over several more times. Every year, 280,000 rollover accidents occur in the United States, resulting in thousands of deaths.
Causes of Vehicle Rollovers
Sports utility vehicles, or SUVs, are more likely than any other type of motor vehicle to be involved in a dangerous rollover accident. This is because they lack the stability many other automobiles have when making sharp turns.
On the whole, SUVs tend to have a higher center of gravity and less space between the left and right wheels (in other words, they have smaller track widths). This makes it more difficult for them to maintain balance on all four wheels when they encounter sudden directional changes, and as a result, they tend to tip over. If a vehicle is going pretty fast before it falls, it is likely to roll several times before coming to a stop.
Every vehicle is given a “rollover rating” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The lower the rating, the more likely the automobile is to flip over. When picking out your personal automobile, you should check the rollover rating of all your options before making a decision. Keep in mind that vehicles with only one star are, at the least, four times more likely to flip than vehicles with five stars (the highest possible rating).
