Texting While Driving
Drivers have a responsibility to drive with care and caution for the safety of others out on the road. When drivers are distracted, the likelihood of accidents increases dramatically. Text messaging is one of the leading sources of driver distraction and has been linked to many motor vehicle accidents, leading many states and municipalities to ban texting while driving.
If you or a loved one has been harmed in an accident caused by another motorist’s negligent and reckless decision to text while driving, you may be able to seek financial compensation through a civil lawsuit. Consequences of Texting While Driving
A recent report from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute released the results of various studies that focused on texting and dialing while driving. The results show that the risk of an accident for distracted drivers as compared to non-distracted drivers increases by:
- 2.8 times for passenger car drivers who are dialing their phones
- 5.9 times for truck drivers who are dialing their phones
- 23.2 times for truckers who are text messaging
The study found that drivers who are dialing or texting generally take their eyes of the road for a period of four to six seconds.
